DENZA Z9GT Debuts In Europe With 9-Minute Charging

Chinese automotive giant BYD is bringing its premium sub-brand DENZA to Europe, marking the debut with the Z9GT, a high-performance shooting brake designed to compete at the upper end of the electric and hybrid vehicle market.

The model will be offered in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid configurations, signaling a dual-track strategy to ease the transition to electrification for European buyers.

Performance and Powertrain

At the core of the Z9GT is DENZA’s new e3 platform, engineered specifically for high-end electrified vehicles. The all-electric variant produces 1,156 horsepower, enabling a 0–62 mph sprint in just 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 167 mph. Its 122.49 kWh battery delivers a WLTP-rated range of up to 372 miles, placing it firmly among long-range EV contenders.

Alongside the EV, DENZA is introducing a plug-in hybrid “Super Hybrid DM” version. This model pairs three electric motors with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, producing a combined 776 horsepower. It offers up to 126 miles of electric-only range and a total driving range of approximately 500 miles when combining battery and fuel. The hybrid accelerates from 0–62 mph in 3.6 seconds, underscoring its performance credentials.

Charging and Battery Technology

The Z9GT’s headline feature is its ultra-fast “FLASH Charging” system, supported by BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. The system can recharge the battery from 10% to 70% in around five minutes and up to 97% in just nine minutes under optimal conditions.

The updated Blade Battery also improves energy density by 5% while enhancing safety and durability. BYD also claims the battery has passed rigorous stress tests, including nail penetration and high-temperature scenarios, without thermal runaway, fire, or smoke—an increasingly important benchmark in EV safety.

Technology and Driving Dynamics

The e3 platform introduces advanced features, including three-motor independent drive, rear-wheel dual-motor steering, and integrated Vehicle Motion Control.

These systems work together to deliver improved agility, stability, and maneuverability, despite the car’s large footprint. The Z9GT can also perform tight turns comparable to those of compact vehicles, thanks to its rear-wheel steering.

Cell-to-body battery integration enhances structural rigidity and safety while improving interior space. The platform also supports air suspension with adjustable stiffness, allowing the vehicle to balance comfort and high-speed handling.

Interior and Infotainment

Inside, the Z9GT leans heavily into luxury and technology. The cabin features premium materials, including fine leather and wood, alongside a flat floor that maximizes space. A 17.3-inch central display anchors the infotainment system, complemented by additional screens for the driver and front passenger, as well as an augmented-reality head-up display.

A 20-speaker audio system developed with Devialet and enhanced by Dolby Atmos delivers an immersive listening experience, positioning the vehicle as much a luxury lounge as a performance machine. Additional features include massaging seats, multi-zone climate control, and advanced ambient lighting.

Design

Visually, the Z9GT adopts a flowing shooting brake silhouette. Designed under the direction of Wolfgang Egger, the exterior emphasizes smooth lines and aerodynamic efficiency, with design cues inspired by silk fabric. The result is a vehicle that aims to stand out in a crowded premium EV market.

Availability and Market Strategy

DENZA plans to roll out the Z9GT across key European markets, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, in the coming months. The company is also offering incentives, including up to 18 months of free fast charging for early customers, underscoring its push to attract premium buyers.

With the Z9GT, DENZA is making a clear statement: the next phase of competition in Europe’s luxury automotive segment will be defined not just by electrification, but by speed—both on the road and at the charger.
